What is Chronic Heart Failure?

Chronic Heart Failure (abbreviated CHF - also called Congestive Heart Failure or simply Heart Failure) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States.  More than five million Americans suffer from CHF, and more than 500,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

CHF is also an expensive disease - in 2005 alone, treatment of CHF in the US was estimated to cost $27.9 billion.  It is responsible for 11 million office visits and 1 million hospitalizations each year.

The good news regarding CHF is that with proper treatment and monitoring, CHF patients can avoid hospitalization and live long and active lives; fully 70% of CHF patients have little or no restriction on daily activities such as driving and excercise.
